How to fix the Ethernet Doesn't Have a Valid IP Configuration Error

Computers and other devices within an organization must get connected over a network for easy data access, sharing, and collaboration. There is an increase in the usage of wireless technology to connect devices, however, some of the challenges associated with wireless technology such as low speed and security vulnerabilities make the ethernet a more attractive network connection option for most large and small organizations. Over 40 years ago, when Xerox needed a system to connect different computers within a building to connect to a laser printer they were developing, Xerox commissioned Robert Metcalfe (a research staff at the establishment) to find solutions to the problem. As they say, the rest is history. The ethernet has changed the way computers connect with other devices.

More than one billion ethernet ports are utilized by organizations and individuals every year. That should give you a clear idea of how vital the ethernet is as regards accessing, sharing, and transferring data within organizations like universities, hospitals, schools, libraries, not-for-profits, and businesses. Before the invention of the ethernet, local area network technologies (LAN) like FDDI and Token ring were used; it was a slow means of data transmission (about 16MB per second). Maybe your laptop doesn’t work on ethernet, the ethernet IP is not configured, the ethernet is faulty, etc. Below are some ways in which you can fix such errors.

What is Ethernet?

This is a network technology that enables computers and other devices to communicate with each other over either a wide area network (WAN) or a local area network (LAN). WAN facilitates communication and transfer of data between computers and other devices from different locations; it could be between devices from different parts of the world. LAN is however tied to a single location, it could be between computers and devices within a home, office, or a large building. The number of devices or users within the network could be in the thousands; as long as it is in a single location it is LAN. The devices are connected using the ethernet cable.

Depending on the number of devices or computers on a network, ethernet cables can be run through the wall and set in a way you can easily plug into your device. You’ll receive faster internet speed and a more secure network since it is a direct connection to the internet. Although the ethernet is the most preferred, if not standard, means for connecting devices within a local area network, there are other technologies such as the Token ring (which was developed by IBM). However, token rings are more expensive. There is no doubt the ethernet offers greater levels of performance compared to the token ring and other alternatives.

Advantages of Using Ethernet

Although the wifi is a popular mode of connecting devices over a network, ethernet is still widely used because of several reasons. Below are some of the benefits of an ethernet connection.

  • One of the most attractive benefits of ethernet is the high levels of speed it provides. It is a direct connection to the network or internet. Data is not transmitted through wireless signals, therefore, there are no interferences to signals. Also, the speed doesn’t depend on how far or near your device is to the router or central point of connection.
  • It is a more secure mode of network connection. If you need to access data on the ethernet network, you must physically connect your device to the network, which is not the case with wireless networks, where data can easily be intercepted over the network especially if it is not configured properly.
  • The ethernet uses less power compared to the wifi connection. If you are looking to cut power costs, the ethernet is a more energy-efficient means to connect devices within your organization or home.
  • Ethernet connection is found to be more reliable than a wireless connection. Radio signals or frequencies are prone to interruptions from objects and electrical devices. It is irritating when signals drop in the middle of a good movie or a good game.
Disadvantages of Using Ethernet

Although Ethernet has several advantages over the popular wifi connection, it has a couple of drawbacks. Some of which are mentioned below:

  • You must have the required technical knowledge to be able to install it by yourself. That wouldn’t be a problem, however, when the cable gets any problem, you must wait for the technician to come and fix it. In the case of wifi, most issues can be fixed with simple troubleshooting.
  • Ethernet cables are not flexible, you must place your device at the point where it is located. If you mostly connect to the internet using a smartphone or tablet, it becomes difficult because ethernet cables are short.
  • Ethernet cables are not ideal for harsh working environments. High temperatures and water can damage the insulation and cause the wires to break.
  • It is expensive and difficult to install in cases where there are many users. Organizations with thousands of users spend a lot of money to install ethernet cables since each user must have a cable to connect to their devices.
How You Can Solve the “Ethernet Doesn’t Have a valid IP Configuration” Error

Whenever there are many devices on a network, there are bound to be connection issues. The “ethernet doesn’t have a valid IP configuration error” occurs because the ethernet has failed to connect your device to the internet. There are several reasons why you may receive this kind of error. It may be because your device is not configured to use ethernet, the IP address is not configured, and sometimes the ethernet cable may be damaged. Below are some of the ways you can fix such errors.

  • Try to restart your router by switching it off and on. Wait a few minutes are try connecting again.
  • If restarting the router doesn’t fix the issue, try updating the network adapter driver. Simply place the cursor on the windows menu and right-click on it. Look for the device manager tab. Once clicked on it, it’ll return a window, where you can find network adapters running your device.
  • On the Network adapters’ drop-down menu, uninstall the ethernet driver. You simply right-click on it and select uninstall from the drop-down menu.
  • Once it has been uninstalled, click the DESKTOP tab to update your driver. Select scan for hardware changes and then right-click on the respective driver. It’ll return a menu where you can choose to update the driver.
  • Now, browse your computer for the software. Once the driver is updated, the error should be fixed.
  • Sometimes, your firewall or antivirus can block connections to strange networks and cause this kind of error. Try disabling your Antivirus and check if it solves the issue.

The ethernet has shaped the way computers and devices connect to each over a LAN or WAN network. It is one of the most reliable and secure ways for devices to communicate with each other. That is why it is popularly used in large organizations like schools, libraries, hospitals, NGOs, and businesses. Ethernet has some limitations, especially when it comes to mobility and the cost of installation in instances where there are many users. Wifi connection is preferred where there is a need for constant mobility of devices.
